We spoke to Sophie Bevan ahead of Mozart with Roderick Williams and Sophie Bevan on 29 October at St Martin-in-the-Fields.

How does singing operatic arias in the concert hall differ from performing them in a staged production?

I don’t miss the stage when singing on the concert platform. A concert performance can actually be even more dramatic than a stage performance, as each audience member conjures their own “set” and pictures from what they’re hearing, rather than being led through a single director’s perspective. I also love the intense relationship you have with an audience in concert — you can look people directly in the eye and convey the emotion in the music, without having to move around or the encumbrance of props and costume. In a staged production, by contrast, that same aria is shaped by the scene, the set, and the other characters around you.
