We recognise that the climate and environmental crisis is one of the most significant challenges facing society today, and that the cultural sector has a crucial role to play in advocating for and demonstrating environmental responsibility through both policy and practice. We understand that transforming creative and cultural industries can have an amplified effect: while our sector is not the largest emitter we are excellent communicators and can inspire and influence others. Being environmentally sustainable also goes hand in hand with being financially sustainable; as we seek to reduce our environmental impacts and protect the planet’s future for the next generations, we reduce the financial burden to the organisation and protect our own.
Our aims are to:
- Reduce our environmental impacts in energy consumption, waste generation and disposal, acting responsibly and efficiently throughout our company and office
- Promote a proactive sustainability culture through continued staff engagement and focused initiatives
- Require consideration of this policy and industry good practice through procurement of equipment, goods and services
- Encourage the use of environmentally friendly forms of transport by employees, audiences, artists and clients
- Communicate our environmental sustainability goals and results to our staff, clients, contractors, audiences and stakeholders
To achieve our aims, we will:
Engage
- Ensure effective leadership of this policy by the Chief Executive and Leadership Team with annual reporting to the Board of Trustees
- Designate ‘environmental champions’ with specific ‘green’ responsibilities to raise awareness and enthusiasm
- Operate a cross-organisation Environmental Sustainability Action Group chaired by the Chief Executive with annual meetings to coordinate and help drive progress
- Ensure the board is kept up to date on environmental legislation and regularly re-evaluate policies to reflect relevant changes.
- Share ‘green’ riders in performance negotiations to ensure clients understand our preferences and commitment to reducing our environmental impacts
- Encourage audiences to use sustainable travel options when attending our activities and events
Measure
- Develop and implement an Environmental Sustainability Action Plan with time limited, measurable objectives and outcomes to be reviewed and updated annually
- Monitor carbon and waste production, keeping records to track against targets and identify peaks in usage
Reduce
- Minimise waste from office operations, reducing print production and usage (from tickets, brochures, hard copies of documents etc)
- Wherever we can, work with local and environmentally responsible suppliers
- Work with our musicians and commissioning partners to reduce or offset our carbon footprint for travel
Disclose
- Make our Environmental Sustainability Policy available on our website
- Communicate our aims and updated progress publicly each year.
