What year did you join the LMP?
1978 I think.

At what age did you start playing?
15.

Apart from the London Mozart Players, what other musical activities are you involved in?
I conduct a choir, The St Cecilia Chorus. I conduct my own original instrument orchestra, The Rinaldo Consort. I devise original concerts incorporating actors and I write scripts – most recently ‘Divine Music for Trumpets and Voices’ – a Handelian retrospective with Handel having been played by Alex Jennings, Simon Russell Beale and Harry Enfield. I regularly join the LSO on percussion.What do you love about your instrument and why?
Its earthiness and depthWhich player of your instrument do you most admire and why?
Too numerous to mention.

What is your favourite piece of music and why?
I’m very fond of Bach, Handel and Richard Strauss. I wouldn’t be able to name a particular piece of music.

What other types of music do you listen to?
Everything.

How do you spend your spare time, if you have any?
Salmon fishing.
